That’s according to the data being crunched by one football analysis website, who has produced a table of the season based upon expected goals.

Expected goals (or xG) is a metric which assigns a value to a chance based on a number of different factors to judge its quality.

And website Experimental 3-6-1 have taken that information to produce a league table which fairly reflects how a team is performing.

In each of the league’s fixtures, both teams’ overall xG is compared, with three points given for a win and none for a loss in the traditional manner.

A draw is defined as two team’s whose xG score is within a third of each other.

The resulting table makes for fascinating viewing with Pompey leading the way in front of Sunderland on 62 points – as can be seen here - nine more than their current total.
