Pompey team news

Alex Bass has been ruled out of Pompey’s League One curtain-raiser.

The Blues keeper will be absent for the Shrews’ trip to Fratton Park as he is still sidelined with an ankle injury.

Bass picked up his knock in Kenny Jackett’s side’s penalty shootout victory at Stevenage in the Carabao Cup last month.

The academy graduate missed Tuesday night’s 2-0 victory over Colchester in the EFL Trophy.

Craig MacGillivray lined up between the posts, while Duncan Turnbull featured in his first Pompey squad on the bench.

And it will be the same situation against Shrewsbury, with Bass still being troubled by bad bruising on his ankle.

The Blues are hopeful he’ll be back training at the start of next week.

Bass is the only injury concern for Jackett, however, and has a full complement of outfield players to select from.

Predicted starting XI

Craig MacGillivray, Callum Johnson, Jack Whatmough, Sean Raggett, Cameron Pring, Tom Naylor, Bryn Morris, Marcus Harness, Gareth Evans, Ronan Curtis, John Marquis. Subs: Duncan Turnbull, James Bolton, Lee Brown, Ben Close, Ryan Williams, Ellis Harrison, Andy Cannon.

Shrewsbury team news

The Shrews have no new injury worries following their Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Middlebrough nearly two weeks ago.

However, that doesn’t mean manager Sam Ricketts has an easy job picking a side for the trip to Fratton Park.

Salop have brought in Wolves keeper Matija Sarkic since then and he could start ahead of Harry Burgoyne.

Aaron Pierre is now fully fit after being on the bench at the Riverside alongside new recruit Marlon Fossey, who also plays in defence.

Striker Daniel Udah is also in contention. Meanwhile, midfielder Josh Vela should return following a suspension.
