‘Got a hell of a lot wrong’: Charlton Athletic boss and ex-Southampton man slams refereeing display in Portsmouth defeat

Pompey claimed a huge three points in their fight for survival after a 3-1 win against relegation rivals Charlton Athletic on Tuesday.

Nathan Jones has hit out at the performance of referee Leigh Doughty in Pompey’s 3-1 win over Charlton Athletic.

And despite the Addicks being ‘dominated’ by the Blues, the head coach insisted his side held the better of the opportunities at The Valley.

A Colby Bishop penalty was sandwiched in between two brilliant long-range strikes from Terry Devlin in each half.

But Jones was far from impressed with the display from the officials, with his Charlton men shown seven yellow cards by referee Doughty - of which five came in the first period.

And the former Southampton boss insisted the man in the middle got ‘a hell of a lot wrong’ at The Valley, including a handball penalty decision before half time.

Speaking on the Addicks’ official website: ‘I’m not sure that was all in our making either. I thought there was a lot going on in the game - I don’t want to get myself in trouble - but that was a difficult night.

‘There was more than our poor performances out there in terms of stuff so it was very difficult for me to comment on that. Everything first half was a booking.

‘I’m not complaining because it didn’t have an impact on the game but their right-back dives twice in the last few minutes that could’ve potentially been free-kicks, bookings and sending offs.

‘In my opinion, the referee got a hell of a lot wrong tonight like a hell of a lot and contributed to that type of game.

‘But look, I’ve got no complaints on the result with that. If we scored after a minute it would’ve been a different game. The goalkeeper makes a routine save, it’s a different game.

‘The penalty then but we got ourselves back into it.

‘The alarming thing for me wasn’t the goals, it was the overall performance and the level of battles that we lost today and that’s been our bread and butter.’

Pompey controlled proceedings at The Valley, with the triumph representing just their third away victory of the campaign.

And although Jones admitted his side were ‘dominated’ on the night by the Blues, he was adamant the Addicks did create the better chances, though.

He added: ‘Two things really. For the majority of the game we got dominated physically which doesn’t happen to us.

‘And then the moments, we were good enough in the moments. We had chance after chance, that can change the game.

‘We’re not playing very well anyway but the first goal is a really poor one. You get an element of fortune with thew squared pass but then no one closes him down and then it goes straight through our goalkeeper. That can’t happen.

‘It’s subjective again the penalty and then it’s almost a carbon copy for the third goal so we just didn't do the basics well.

‘In between all those moments, because we had better chances than them actually, we had clear cut chances TC (Tyreece Campbell) steps inside, we’ve had chances from set plays.

‘But just the all round performance tonight was just really poor. I thought we got dominated. I thought our back players got dominated, our midfielders definitely got dominated and then we didn't really impact anything up front.

‘Pretty much that was an inept performance from us and probably came in one of the worst games.’
