'Another robbery. Right decision. Perplexing': Split Portsmouth verdict over controversial Sheffield United incident
Pompey fell to a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United on Saturday afternoon, but the Blues were denied a first-half goal in controversial style.
Pompey fans on social media have been torn over Saturday’s disallowed goal against Sheffield United.
The hosts did, though, control proceedings in the first half but squandered brilliant opportunities through Adrian Segecic and Terry Devlin.
But Pompey were denied an opener in controversial style just 23 minutes into the contest, with Colby Bishop slotting home from close range.
However, referee James Lingington adjudged Ebou Adams to have fouled Femi Seriki in the build-up, much to the frustration of the Magic Man, who thought he netted his first league goal in six months.
Although the Fratton Faithful questioned the call at the time, Mousinho admitted after the defeat that he would’ve have been disappointed if it was his team defending and the ref didn’t give the decision.
And that is a verdict which has been continued on social media, with supporters online agreeing with the official’s decision. Other fans, meanwhile, disagreed with the outcome and felt the goal should’ve stood.
Here’s the best of the reaction from both Facebook and X.
Pompey verdict on disallowed goal against Sheffield United
Brendon Vbone: 100% a foul by Ebou, he lunged and caught the foot of the SU player.
James Lewis: I think it’s one of those where you would be annoyed if it was the other team as Mous said.
Carla Lala Hodgson: Definitely a goal from my view in Milton, Ebou was bought down so initially I thought he blew for a penalty. Shocking ref, and equally shocking lino, couldn't keep up pace, was caught short quite a few times, and missed a few blatant offsides. Rookies yesterday.
Andrew Farndell: It was definitely the wrong decision but the blame for the defeat lays squarely at the feet of Bishop for missing all those chances and Mousinho for not listening to us fans when we tell him who to pick and how to play.
Chris Whiting: Foul by Adams on defender unfortunately & to be fair to the ref he blew straight away.
Richard Price: Should of been allowed. I thought it was a penalty anyway myself so goal should have stood after playing the advantage. Ref was awful.
Shane Smith: Sadly the right decision, we had our chances to win the game but as usual same old same old, it’s as though we’re living the Cowley days again, lose to Charlton & Wrexham & we’re relegated.
Paul Dollymore: I was in the front row of the Milton End and had an unobstructed view. My initial reaction was a penalty due to Adams being fouled (not the other way round), therefore, for me it was either a penalty or the goal should have stood. Due to the conjecture about whether it was Adams who actually committed the foul, I've watched it back several times. There's a great view from the South Stand directly in line with it (on one of the You Tube podcasts) and from that I maintain that there's a strong argument Adams was fouled, the Sheffield United player lunges across Adams (from his left) and takes his foot away. Moreover, I find the Sheffield United players reaction very telling. There is no real concerted appeals to the referee that it was actually a foul by Adams. The Ref didn't help himself because he blew up really late (after the ball was in the net). I don't understand why he didn't whistle when the alleged foul happened. He wasn't playing advantage, so a perplexing decision for me on numerous levels.

@chambers552325: Unfortunately, the ref got the decision right this weekend.
@knight37: I think the referee didn’t have a clue so he gave a free kick to the defending team! To me I didn’t have a clue if it was a penalty or a free kick so if I was referee I would have played on. 50/50 ball no one won maybe both fouled each other?
@SamuelEMCB: Another week another robbery.
@kev19harding: Got it wrong big time referee was so bad where do you start with him it must have been his first game apart from under 10s where do they get them from.
@Ansufatisa10: Never a foul but beautiful play.
