Portsmouth's belief over landing one of game's exciting talents from Premier League big boys

But the Blues’ assistant manager admitted he isn’t sure how close his side are to getting a promising talent in on a temporary deal.

Kenny Jackett is looking to bolster his squad for the campaign ahead, with the competitive action getting underway at Stevenage on Saturday in the Carabao Cup.

League One football then starts on September 12 with Shrewsbury coming to Fratton Park.

Pompey have yet to add any new faces this summer, however, with Sean Raggett the only new recruit as his loan stay from Norwich was made permanent.

Gallen has stressed he feels that his side may need to hold their nerve when it comes to waiting for the right player to become available.

But with contact made with the Premier League big clubs over the prospects Pompey have on their radar, the No2 is confident they will be be able to snare one of the game’s exciting, emerging talents before the window between top flight and EFL clubs closes on October 16.

He said: ‘We understand the fans want new faces - and I think we’ll have them here by October.

‘But if you were to ask me when, I don’t know.

‘There could be the chance to get someone who’s a brilliant youngster from one of the big clubs.

‘I think it could open up later in terms of under-21s from the big academies for us.’

Gillingham have landed nine new faces with Blackpool bringing in eight players and Bristol Rovers seven. The likes of Plymouth, Oxford, AFC Wimbledon and Fleetwood have also been recruiting heavily.

Pompey have been linked with loan moves for Premier League youngsters such as Leeds’ Leif Davis and Brighton's Alex Cochrane.
