Portsmouth's square peg in round hole is blossoming ahead of Northampton clash

It may have been deemed a square peg in a round hole, but John Marquis is marvelling at Marcus Harness’ positional switch.

The winger has this month been converted into a central striker – and Pompey have been reaping the rewards.

With four goals, two assists and two man-of-the-match accolades in October so far, Harness has adapted magnificently to his new challenge.

In the past two matches, Marquis has served as his strike partner in the absence of the injured Ellis Harrison.

And the pair are set to line up again in attack for tomorrow night’s visit of Northampton (7.45pm).

Marquis told The News: ‘Marcus is getting goals and setting them up, it’s a position which definitely suits him.

‘He’s just starting out in that role, his potential there is massive. I am helping him as much as I can with my experience – and he can help me as well.

‘Marcus has a bit of everything, he’s sharp, he’s tricky, he can run in behind, can play with the ball at his feet and is also strong for someone who is short.

‘He can finish as well, which is the main thing. When he gets into areas he can score, so he has everything.

‘Him playing up front gives him less defensive duties and the need to track full-backs. In the two he can play a bit more in bursts and use his energy when we get the ball.

‘Marcus is still young, it’s a new position, but he has adapted to it very well. The more games he gets there, he’s only got to get better, in my opinion.’

Marquis himself has now scored three times in his last two outings, taking his tally for the campaign to five.

Only the in-form Harness with his haul of six goals surpasses that total.

The arrival of Jordy Hiwula on a free transfer has also bolstered a striking pool which expects to be without Harrison for up to three weeks.

Marquis added: ‘Along with Ellis and Jordy, we have good options up front for the team, which can only be good.

‘Everybody has to keep pushing each other to try to stay in the side.’
