But can the same be said of the 12 signings who arrived this summer, with Danny Cowley carrying out a big overhaul of his squad options?
We’ve assessed the contribution of the dozen new faces, breaking down how they’ve performed and then giving a grade for their efforts so far.
5. Marlon Pack - A+
What. A. Player. Pack has barely put a foot wrong since his homecoming and has been stacking up the man-of-the-match performances. There can’t be too many performing better in League One this term with his passing making Pompey tick. Crucially has raised standards and sets a high bar in training, too. Photo: Jason Brown
6. Owen Dale - B
Getting better and better with each game. Some of his team-mates have rightly been picking up the plaudits, but that shouldn’t detract from how well Dale is playing. Has brought an energy and attacking verve to the right flank which has gone down well with fans. Photo: Jason Brown
7. Joe Rafferty - B-
Been a dependable presence in the right-back role and the quality of his displays have not gone unnoticed by the Fratton faithful. Firmly established ahead of Zak Swanson, but has missed the past couple of games through a stomach problem. Hopefully will be able to avoid undergoing surgery. Photo: Jason Brown
8. Zak Swanson - C
Had limited involvement since his arrival from Arsenal, with his only starts coming in the Carabao Cup and Papa John’s Trophy. Those who watched Swanson at close quarters in pre-season will be aware Pompey have a player of real potential in the right-back, but seems to be in the ‘one for the future’ category. Could benefit from a loan in January, if the lack of minutes persists. Photo: Jason Brown
