According to the East Anglian Daily Times, the former Ipswich centre-back is a target for the Blues and Wigan Athletic.

Smith’s currently a free agent since leaving MLS side Colorado Rapids in November and has been training with the Tractor Boys’ under-23s.

Portman Road boss Paul Lambert has ruled out a move for the 29-year-old, who made 268 appearances before his departure in January 2018.

Smith is a left-sided centre-half, which the Blues are currently chasing during the January transfer window.

Christian Burgess and Sean Raggett have been Jackett’s preferred pairing in central defence recently, while Jack Whatmough has recovered from his long-term knee injury after playing 90 minutes for the reserves at Plymouth on Tuesday.

But ex-Fratton Park boss Paul Cook is also reportedly interested in bringing New Zealand international Smith to Wigan in a bid to bolster their Championship relegation battle.
