And Williams would like to see the midfielder remain at Fratton Park beyond his temporary stay.

He told The News: ‘You could hear a pin drop in the dressing room, nobody said a word, just the gaffer.

‘Everyone was trying to console Cam because he is such a good guy and you feel for him.

‘Fair play to him for stepping up and taking one. People miss penalties, unfortunately. The keeper made a good save,

‘Hopefully we can keep him on board. I like playing with him and I’m sure it will give him the extra fire in his belly to kick on next season.

‘You can’t really talk to him after what happened, I gave him a hug. We are all there for him, there’s not a lot you can say to him.

‘He’s happy here, he likes the boys, he likes the manager. He has settled in well, he’s settled in quickly.

‘He was part of a really good winning streak. Everyone wants him here – we’ll have to see what he wants and the club.

‘For me, I want him here next year.’
