However, remarkably, with two matches to spare, John Mousinho’s men stayed up following an Easter Monday victory over Watford at Fratton Park.
Ultimately, the Blues finished 16th in the Championship – five points above the relegation zone – for a fine finish back at this level after a 12-year absence.
And here are Neil Allen’s ratings for each Pompey player for the 2024-25 season...

21. Isaac Hayden - 7.5
(17 games, 0 goals) Signed to add competition for Freddie Potts and Andre Dozzell in the centre of midfield, it was a slow start to life at Pompey for Hayden. Although he did little wrong, it took a while to bring him up to speed having not played competitively since the previous season. Eventually he established himself as a starter, finishing the season strongly and impressing with his physicality and calmness on the ball. Photo: Jason Brown

22. Abdoulaye Kamara - 4.5
(6 games, 0 goals) An eye-catching debut off the bench against Sunderland in August, but failed to make another first-team squad after his full debut in January’s FA Cup clash at Wycombe. Admittedly, the German midfielder requires time to adjust to the English game and Championship future, but it still has been a disappointing first year on the south coast. Not sure where he goes from here. Photo: Jason Brown

23. Paddy Lane - 6
(24 games, 1 goal) The popular winger’s season ended in January after suffering a knee injury in defeat at Blackburn. The timing was harsh, having begun to find his feet a little in the Championship, including a maiden goal on New Year’s Day against Swansea. Had initially lost his place after starting seven of the opening eight league games and still to show he can shine at this level. Photo: Jason Brown

24. Josh Murphy - 9.5
(42 games, 7 goals) Deservedly dominated the player of the season awards, including The News/Sports Mail honour. Was viewed as an exciting signing following his arrival from Oxford and he has definitely fulfilled those high expectations. An old-fashioned winger who loves to attack full-backs with pace on the outside and is wonderful to watch in full flow. With seven goals and 14 assists, he has oozed class and is absolutely irreplaceable for Pompey. The Blues’ best winger since leaving the Premier League. Photo: Jason Brown
