The wing-back has penned a deal for the remainder of the season with the Black Cats, having been a free agent since his departure from Plymouth at the end of last term.

Despite being a key player for the Pilgrims after helping them to League wo promotion, MacFazdean turned down a new deal to stay at Home Park.

As a result, MacFazdean – who came through the ranks at Sheffield United – could make his debut against Pompey.

While the transfer window shut last Friday, clubs can still recruit free agents – something Kenny Jackett has not ruled out.

Currently, the Blues boss has one berth in his 22-man squad remaining.

With only one senior senior fit in John Marquis, a replacement for Ellis Harrison as he recovers from a hamstring injury could be sought.
