The Black Cats’ 1-0 victory at Tranmere tonight meant they moved back into the top six. Charlie Wyke scored the only goal on the hour mark at Prenton Park.

Kenny Jackett’s troops’ 2-0 win over Lincoln on Tuesday propelled them ahead of Sunderland and into the play-offs for only the first time this season.

Seventh-placed Pompey sit just one point and two places behind Sunderland, who have played one game more.

In tonight’s other game, Gillingham beat Shrewsbury 2-0 at Priestfield to move 12th.
