The Black Cats’ 1-0 victory at Tranmere tonight meant they moved back into the top six. Charlie Wyke scored the only goal on the hour mark at Prenton Park.

Kenny Jackett’s troops’ 2-0 win over Lincoln on Tuesday propelled them ahead of Sunderland and into the play-offs for only the first time this season.

Although the Blues were in the top six for only 24 hours, they’ll regain their berth should they triumph against Phil Parkinson’s men at Fratton Park this weekend.

The third-tier heavyweights get prepared to renew their rivalry and will go toe-to-toe for the seventh time in little more than 13 months.

Seventh-placed Pompey sit just one point and two places behind Sunderland, who have played one game more.

In tonight’s other game, Gillingham beat Shrewsbury 2-0 at Priestfield to move 12th.
