While many have impressed during their stays in the first half of the campaign, there are one or two more forgotten names who have had their spells cut short.
But how often have players had their spells on the south coast cut short at the midway stage?
We’ve taken a look at the eight loan stars who have had their time at Fratton Park brought to a premature end in January during the club’s time in League One.
When you think of January departures, this man is at the forefront of everyone’s mind. The midfielder was a vital part of Jackett’s engine room and guided Pompey to the League One summit as well as the fourth round of the FA Cup. Some sections of the Fratton faithful still pinpoint his Millwall recall as the main reason why the Blues failed to win promotion that term. Like Green, Wheeler was another loanee who was frustrated by a lack of game time in the first half of the 2018-19 campaign. He made just one League One start for the Blues and was recalled midway through his season-long stay by QPR. The midfielder would go on to spend the second half of the term on loan at MK Dons, where he netted four goals in 19 appearances in League Two. Photo: Joe Pepler
It is no surprise many sections of the Fratton faithful forget the striker spent the first half of the 2018-19 season on loan at PO4. And rightly so, with Mason failing to score in any of his four outings in all competitions. Following his return to Wolves, he would soon be released by the Molineux outfit and spent the remainder of the term as a free agent. Photo: Joe Pepler
McCrory was another forgotten man who featured just three times for the Blues during his loan stay from Burton. Having arrived after Tareiq Holmes-Dennis suffered a season-ending injury, the left-back would also go on to suffer a similar problem which curtailed his time at Fratton Park. The defender returned to the Pirelli Stadium and would go on to make eight outings in the Championship for the Brewers following his injury comeback that term. Photo: Joe Pepler
