The 38-year-old’s had a remarkable career, also representing the likes of Coventry, Sheffield United and Leeds along the way.

To mark the feat, Doyle named his best XI that he’s played alongside throughout his time in the game for the Magpies’ official website.

And included in his side were no less than five of his former Fratton Park team-mates.

Doyle, who scored three goals in 93 appearances during his two-year spell at the Blues, named David Forde, Matt Clarke, Enda Stevens, Kyle Bennett and Marc McNulty in his 3-4-3 formation.

It was only McNulty who wasn’t part of the team that defeated Cheltenham 6-1 on the final day of the 2016-17 campaign, which yielded Paul Cook’s men the fourth-tier crown.

Doyle played alongside centre-back Clarke and left-back Stevens – now with Premier League sides Brighton and Sheffield respectively – and Bennett for the duration of his time on the south coast.

McNulty was on loan at PO4 during 2015-16 from Sheffield United, netting 12 times in 34 outings as Pompey suffered play-off semi-final heartbreak to Plymouth.

Forde, meanwhile, arrived on a season-long loan from Millwall in the summer of 2016 to solve the Blues’ goalkeeping problem that blighted their promotion bid the previous term.

He did exactly that, registering 19 clean sheets and impressing the way he commanded his area to collect crosses.

Doyle said: ‘On the left-hand side of the three-man defence, I am going to go with Matt Clarke. I played with him over the course of two years and he’s very similar to Harry.

‘He came from Ipswich and was just starting his career, but he has very similar attributes to Harry Maguire. He started every attack for us, running out with the ball from defence.

‘His passing was unbelievable and as well as his defensive qualities first and foremost.

‘Left wing-back I’m going to go Enda Stevens and on the right I’ll go Robert Snodgrass.

‘Enda Stevens was unbelievable with the ball, attacking up and down and now you see him playing wing-back for Sheffield United in the Premier League.

'He’s a massive talent and to see him grow at a club like Portsmouth when I was there, week in, week out – he was unbelievable for us. He was player of the year for us two years in a row and rightly so.

‘The right side of the attack is a bit more tricky. There’re two that come into my mind and I feel bad for leaving one out.

‘It’s a toss of a coin between Stephen Quinn, who I played with at Sheffield United, and Kyle Bennett from Portsmouth.

‘I’m going to go with Kyle Bennett because he was one of the best players I played with technically unbelievable and always available for the ball.

‘The one thing that stuck out for me is playing for a club like Portsmouth, it can get tough at times with big crowds.

'But he never shied away from the challenge because of his character. When the chips were down, he was unbelievable and a great character.’

Doyle’s XI (3-4-3)

David Forde; Harry Maguire, Gary McAllister, Matt Clarke; Robert Snodgrass, Dennis Wise, Kevin McDonald, Enda Stevens; Kyle Bennett, Marc McNulty, Gary McSheffrey.
