The Blues missed out on a move for Millwall’s Ben Thompson, while they didn’t bring in an additional striker many fans thought was needed.
As a result, it means Kenny Jackett has a berth left in his 22-man squad as keeper Duncan Turnbull won’t be registered.
While it’s just more than 10 weeks until the January transfer window opens, Pompey can still add to their squad in the form of free agents.
There are still plenty of players without a club, perhaps more so than usual given the financial climate.
Here’s a look at several players that could suit the Blues.

5. Duncan Watmore
Well regarded at Sunderland and perhaps a surprise he was released in the summer. Capable of playing up top. Photo: Owen Humphreys

6. Andre Green
If Marcus Harness is being regarded more as a striker, Pompey may instead look to strengthen the wide areas. Green didn't get the game-time he wanted when on loan at PO4 in 2018-19 but he was a player held in high regard by Kenny Jackett. Photo: Joe Pepler

7. Kevin Stewart
Another midfielder released by Hull but is still without a club. Has Premier League and Championship experience but wages could make a move out of the question. Photo: David Rogers

8. Andy King
The Premier League winner with Leicester endured a difficult 2019-20. He was out of favour on loan at Rangers before not being a regular starter when spending the second half of the campaign at Huddersfield. Regular football once again may appeal, but wages would likely be a stumbling block. Photo: Alex Pantling
