The Telegraph reports that all 72 clubs were sent a letter on New Year’s Eve to abide by the rules with immediate effect. They will remain in place for up to six weeks.

A rise in coronavirus cases has meant swathes of games have been postponed in recent weeks – included Pompey’s League One clashes with Swindon and Bristol Rovers over the festive period.

What’s more, the next round of mandatory testing takes place on January 4. There are fears the new strain of coronavirus, which is more transmittable, will flag up further positive cases.

The EFL has had no plans to suspend the campaign, despite there being some calls for a two-week ‘circuit break’.

Instead, according to The Telegraph, the league has brought in 11 new measures – similar to when players returned after the first national lockdown – to stop the spread of the virus at clubs.

They include things such as face coverings being worn at all times indoors, changing rooms being closed with players and staff wearing their kit to training, eating areas at training grounds to be closed and virtual team meetings being preferred when a well-ventilated space is not available.

The EFL has also ‘strongly advised’ clubs to use multiple coaches when travelling to away games to help with social distancing.

When that is not possible, travelling individually by car is then recommended.
