The skipper, rather surprisingly, didn't feature in either leg of the Blues’ semi-final defeat to Oxford United on penalties.

Despite featuring in every league game when available throughout the season, Naylor was left on the bench for the duration – both the Fratton Park and Kassam Stadium showdowns.

Manager Kenny Jackett instead opted to partner Barnsley loanee Cameron McGeehan with Bryn Morris in Pompey’s midfield – despite the latter not playing football for 14 months following an abdomen injury.

And as the Fratton faithful take stock of that devastating loss at the hands of Oxford, Naylor took to Twitter to thank the fans for the support they've given Pompey all season.

The ex-Burton man added he was devastated to have missed out on promotion to the Championship.

Naylor wrote on Twitter: ‘Words can’t describe with the way I’m feeling today, me and the boys are devastated in missing this great chance of promotion.

‘Thank you to the fans all season sticking behind us.’

In total, Naylor has made 96 appearances for Pompey, scoring five goals.
