'Unacceptable' - Accrington chairman's demand to EFL ahead of Portsmouth clash

Accrington Stanley's chairman has called for League One and League Two to be extended by a minimum of two weeks in order for fixtures to be fulfilled this season.

A multitude of games have been postponed in the third tier because of players testing positive for coronavirus.

Pompey were forced to call off clashes with Swindon and Bristol Rovers over the festive period as a new strain of Covid-19 spreads across the country.

On Tuesday, seven out of 12 fixtures were cancelled while Shrewsbury and Fleetwood have now called off games because of Covid-19 cases in their respective camps.

It means that clubs face a backlog of fixtures to get the 2020-21 season completed as scheduled by May 8.

However, more cancellations are a realisitc possibility because of the pandemic and now the weather heading into the midst of winter.

Now Andy Holt, the owner of Stanley, believes the campaign must be be pushed back so all fixtures can be played.

He wrote on Twitter: ‘To finish season on time @ASFCofficial have to play a game every four days.

‘This is unacceptable. Season should be extended by @EFL now for L1 and L2 minimum two weeks.

‘We have to expect more disruption from #COVID19 or weather. We should act now, rather than be forced later.’
