That means James Bolton keeps his spot in central defence alongside Sean Raggett, despite Jack Whatmough and Rasmus Nicolaisen both available.

Nicolaisen is named on the bench after the birth of his second son, with Whatmough omitted from the squad completely.

Here's how the Fratton faithful reacted to the team news on Twitter...

Come on lads, let’s win this for Kenny

@jackettsjacket

Excited to Byers as a starter & how he controls the game. Can't think of a better 11. Players pushing for positions everywhere & some got to feel hard done by as have done nothing wrong it's just a strong squad #pompey

@jackcummins_9

@blakepfc

4-2-3-1? Even still that is class

@Mourby

Glad to see Byers given a go. He was very good when he came on last game!
