Now Pompey and Plymouth will renew their previously-heated rivalry – but this time in the virtual world.

The Blues have been drawn against the Pilgrims in the opening round of the EFL Football Manager Cup.

The EFL have partnered with the popular computer game and charity Mind to form a 54-team knockout competition over the next month – while the coronavirus crisis suspends the real-life season.

Stepping into Kenny Jackett’s shoes on Pompey's behalf is supporter and Football Manager streamer Christopher Proud - better known as Proudie - after winning a fan vote on Twitter.

The Blues will face Plymouth in the opening round, meaning the latest port battle is soon to ensue.

In 2016, Cook's men suffered last-minute play-off semi-final heartbreak at Home Park, although the Pilgrims would be beaten by AFC Wimbledon at Wembley.

Both clubs managed to removed the shackles of the fourth tier the following campaign, although it was Pompey who claimed the silverware on the final day of the season.

The 6-1 thrashing of Cheltenham meant the Blues clinched the title on goal difference, with Argyle having to settle for second spot after drawing 1-1 with Grimsby.

The rivalry mellowed somewhat after Cook departed for Wigan and Kenny Jackett took over at the Fratton Park helm, although there still was some friction between both sets of supporters.

Adams was sacked by Plymouth last April with them in the relegation zone, although they failed to avoid the drop.
