The Blues boss has been quick to call time on the midfielder’s appearances, with Cannon being withdrawn on 15 occasions this term.

The 23-year-old has completed 90 league minutes twice this term – the last of those games coming in the defeat at Wycombe last September.

Cannon has been left frustrated by that at times, with his disappointment visible as he was taken off in the 95th minute after an excellent showing in the 2-0 win over Sunderland at the start of last month.

Jacket, however, feels the man who arrived from Rochdale last year brings a high-intensity game to Pompey’s starting XI.

And, in the eyes of his manager, that approach is often difficult to sustain for the duration of a game.

Jackett said: ‘Sometimes one or two fresh ones will give it everything they’ve got for 60 or 70 minutes.

‘He has a big impact, whether that’s off the bench or starting and going for it.’

Jackett’s explained he has extra assurance over his approach with Cannon, with there a confidence he has players who can make an impact when he’s withdrawn.

And he can see the hunger from his 26-man squad to make a mark when given a chance.

Jackett added: ‘It does come down to the standard of the player.

‘If you have like for like in some positions then you’d be silly not to use it.

‘You want to see that (players hungry to play) 100 per cent.’
