The Blues boss said he'd unlikely tweak his side too much when conducting his pre-match press conference ahead of the second-round tie.

Yet Jackett opted to bring in five fresh places from Tuesday night's League One draw with Oxford.

In came Alex Bass, Rasmus Nicolaisen, Cam Pring, Ben Close and Ryan Williams.

Meanwhile, Craig MacGillivray, Jack Whatmough, Lee Brown, Andy Cannon and John Marquis were given a breather.

It proved no hindrance to Pompey’s performance, though, as they delivered a comprehensive 6-1 win.

Jackett said: ‘I felt that it was like for like. Everyone barring Alex Bass has played lots of minutes this season.

‘I did feel comfortable the players coming in would bring us fresh energy, knew their roles and have had enough football to be able to produce a good performances.

‘I did think some players needed some respite (with some big games ahead). If you're looking up until mid-January, it's going to be a busy period but it's a good period as well.

‘There are some big games and we will have to be ready and right.

‘All of our players will have to have full energy. Trusting the players is important and when we do make changes, the ones come in bring a bit more energy and quality to the team.’
