And Jackett was delighted with the combative performer who continues to be a pivotal presence.

Pompey's boss said: '˜Tom has been a really consistent player for us and a consistent person.

'˜He was booked in the first half but seemed to play the ball. It looked 50/50.

'˜We have to accept the referee's decision, so you must manage yourself and get your timing exactly right from then on '“ and he did.

'˜He's a very reliable lad, has good experience and I think he will do well for the club.

'˜At times last season we wanted some physical presence alongside Ben Close.

'˜That's where it was needed and you can see in terms of our midfield that has been brought in now.

'˜As a manager, I have always liked Tom, I'm pleased he's come to the club, we have done well to get him '“ and has excelled so far.'
