The midfielder featured for 45 minutes in Pompey Reserves' 4-1 Central League Cup defeat at AFC Bournemouth on Tuesday.

Donohue was making his first appearance for seven weeks after picking up a hamstring setback in the Blues' 2-2 draw with Burton on October 23.

The Welsh talent suffered internal bleeding when colliding with team-mate Jack Whatmough and subsequently missed nine of Kenny Jackett's side's fixtures.

Donohue impressed in the first half against the Cherries before he was replaced by Freddie Read at the interval.

That was always the plan, though, and Kelly was delighted with how the ex-Chesterfield man performed.

The Pompey Academy chief said: '˜It was nice to see Dion back and he looked good over 45 minutes.

'˜It was a nice step back in for him and he played in a good, high-energy game '“ I'm sure he was stiff after it.

'˜He was absolutely fine. We set out for him to play 45 minutes.

'˜It was always going to be for 45 minutes, so there weren't any niggles that he picked up.

'˜He was always going to play for 45 minutes and we're pleased to see him back.'
