The deal sees the 21-year-old join Robins' side on loan until January, when it will convert to a permanent move.

Robins said Chaplin couldn't play if the two sides met in a cup competition.

The News understands, however, the terms of the agreement mean Pompey hold the cards over whether the academy graduate can take part in the league clash.

In the Premier League, Lomana Lualua famously scored for Pompey against Newcastle in 2004, after signing a temporary deal.

That led to rule change in the top flight saying players couldn't feature against their parent clubs.
