But the Blues privately believe they could still land the midfielder if they are to seal promotion to the Championship.

Pompey are focussing their January recruitment on the middle of the park and still feel they have the ability to bring in a heavy-hitting player in that area.

That’s despite facing spending and squad restrictions under the wage cap introduced in League One this summer.

Kenny Jackett is content with the players at his disposal and the depth of his 22-man squad.

But there is concern that there is not currently like-for-like cover for Andy Cannon in the 4-4-2 set-up being employed at present.

That makes the addition of another option who can bring similar drive in that area a priority when the window reopens on Friday.

Pompey were keen on making a return bid to bring in Thompson from Championship Millwall, with the prospect of the 25-year-old coming back to Fratton Park exciting fans.

But Thompson has made it clear he’s not prepared to drop down a division and ply his trade in League One once more.

A move for Thompson is still an avenue Pompey may pursue moving forward, however, if they are to gain promotion to the Championship.

The midfield area is one Jackett is prioritising in the next window but he also has other issues to address.

Loanees Rasmus Nicolaisen and Cam Pring have January recalls from their parent clubs which could be actioned.

Nicolaisen has aired some frustration at his lack of playing time with Pring doing likewise, although the left-back made it clear he’d like to stay put at Pompey.

There is also striker Jordy Hiwula’s future to address, with the 26-year-old short-deal coming to a close in the new year.
