It means Pompey are firmly on target to surpass the 11,004 they attracted during Paul Cook’s first season in charge.

With existing season-ticket holders having until late tomorrow to renew and ensure they retain their seats, more sales are anticipated.

And chairman Iain McInnes is delighted with the response so far.

He said: ‘We budgeted for a little lower season-ticket numbers than last year, we thought we would be prudent.

‘So this response from supporters is phenomenal.

‘We took into account failure to leave the league and that perhaps people will say it was not a bad season all round, an improvement nonetheless but there is still that tinge of disappointment.

‘Thankfully, they have continued to back us in the way they do.

‘The number is already 10,502 – that is incredible.

‘Of those, more than 1,000 people have never bought a season ticket in recent history, yet they have now made that commitment.

‘This commitment by supporters has to be absolutely repaid, nobody in the football club believes the target is nothing else other than getting into the next division.’

Pompey sold 11,047 season tickets in 2014-15 – their highest tally during the current residence of League Two.

The last time the Blues occupied League One, during 2012-13, they had 8,080 holders.
