Simon Walton miss sees Hawks pay penalty against Chelmsford City

Simon Walton blasted his first-half spot-kick straight at the visiting goalkeeper, as Paul Doswell’s side were unable to build on their 6-0 midweek thumping of Dorking.

The Hawks wasted a glorious chance to take the lead on eight minutes.

Elliott Omozusi tripped Wes Fogden inside the area and the referee immediately awarded a penalty.

But Walton blasted his spot-kick straight at keeper Carl Pentney and headed the rebound on to the top of the crossbar.

The miss seemed to unsettle the Hawks and the Clarets got more into the game.

Then Sam Magri had to hook the ball away as the visitors headed dangerously across the face of goal.

At the other end, a terrific through ball put Fogden in but Pentney saved with his legs.

Another Hawks chance went begging when Alfie Rutherford rounded the keeper – but he sent his effort against the foot of the far post.

As the interval approached, Roarie Deacon forced a diving save from Pentney with a drive from the edge of the area.

Rutherford completely misdirected his header in front of goal early in the second period.

The Hawks were pressing forward looking for the breakthrough but couldn't find the final pass.

And there was increasing frustration as the home side lost their way.

However, those fears were alleviate when the in-form Jonah Ayunga skipped past three tackles before sending a shot bouncing past the post.Hopes were then raised further when substitute Benny Read appeared to be brought down in the area by the goalkeeper.

However, the referee waved away the appeals and the game ended in a goalless draw.
