'We didn’t work hard enough to block crosses coming into our box, both of their full-backs had a very good day in terms of their service.

'It’s a high run of games where we haven’t had a clean sheet, too many goals against and that is the basis of everything good teams do.

'The goals against column have to be zeros and ones - then you can start to build some confidence and earn some points.'As a side we are giving soft goals away, it doesn’t seem too hard to score against us and it has to improve.'

'We didn’t play well and that’s the strange thing, but on the flip side, we found ourselves 2-0 up and I felt there was a lot more to come from us.

'I must admit, it’s the end of a three-game week and it takes a lot out of you in terms of travelling etc and maybe that played a part in our start.

'For me, they had a bit of the ball Portsmouth but I don’t remember Mark Oxley making too many saves, so really it was just about game management.

'Of course, conceding a goal before half-time made it a bit edgy and we knew Portsmouth would come out and try and push us back, but I thought Michael Turner and Anton Ferdinand played really well and were clever in their defending

'Can I complain? Absolutely not. The players have been superb with their efforts for each other and they’re enjoying their football and so they should. I keep saying to them, it’s what you do, and it seems like they’re listening to me at the moment and long may it continue.'

'We had the majority of the possession, the majority of the chances.

'Even when we went down to 10 men we looked pretty strong.

'We limited them to very few chances.

'When we went down to 10 men they had a few counter-attacks but besides from that we had enough chances to finish off the game or even equalise.

'When you don't put chances way, have 10 men and are away from home, all those things add up and it shows in the result.'

'The Blues' ponderous defending in a wretched opening put paid to any hopes of a return at Roots Hall.

'And the loss of three key men is arguably as damaging as another opportunity to pick up a return being passed up.
