Toddy's Blues hopes fade

Guy Whittingham has made no secret of his desire to pull off an emotional Fratton Park reunion with the former Blues favourite.

Yet the caretaker boss has revealed momentum for a potential switch has now slowed, with talks yet to even reach the financial stage.

Whittingham was last night tight-lipped on the precise reasons why Todorov’s comeback may have stalled ahead of the January transfer window closing tomorrow.

However, he reiterated that Pompey remain interested in recruiting the 34-year-old.

Todorov is currently midway through a 12-month deal with Ukrainian side Hoverla Uzhhorod, although his agent, Lee Payne, has insisted the striker is ready to tear up that contract.

There now appears a sticking point as far as a Todorov return goes.

However, Whittingham hasn’t given up all hope of pulling off what would be a coup for Pompey.

He said: ‘It is not a position we can do anything with at this moment in time.

‘I would rather not say the reasons but it’s not really financial – we have not got that far.

‘We have not been able to get that far in talks.

‘It might be possible something can still happen.

‘When a person of his calibre comes along you don’t dismiss it, you see whether you can work at it.

‘But at the moment it is not possible – we will see.’

Todorov fired Pompey into the Premier League with 26 goals in the 2002-03 campaign.

He left Fratton in 2007 for Charlton, before moving back to his native Bulgaria with Litex Lovech.

In total, Todorov scored 33 goals in 83 appearances for the Blues after arriving in March 2002 for what proved to be a bargain £750,000 from West Ham.
