Why Portsmouth's flying trio have thrivedÂ

Oli Hawkins, Ronan Curtis and Jamal Lowe have spearheaded the Blues' attack for the majority of the season so far and have been in fine fettle.

The trio plundered a combined 11 goals and 11 assists prior to yesterday's clash against Wycombe Wanderers.

All three have proved a potent attacking threat in the early stages of the campaign.

And Jackett feels the pace of wingers Curtis and Lowe, dovetailed with Hawkins' height and strength, is the reason behind their success.

The Pompey boss said: '˜We want players at the top end of the pitch who can both score and provide. That is the ideal.

'˜For those three, one is very knew, which is Ronan Curtis, Oli Hawkins has been here a year now, and Jamal Lowe came in the door just before me.

'˜He had his first full season in professional football, it was a good season, and will be looking to build on that this season.

'˜There is a compliment where they play and the types of players they are.

'˜I'm very pleased with that and those three have played a big part.

'˜Behind that we feel like we have some power.

'˜They've made a good start.'

Hawkins has been the focal point of the Blues' attack so far this term.

Although he doesn't offer the same goalscoring prowess of Brett Pitman '“ who has mainly been confined to a spot on the substitutes' bench '“ the former Dagenham & Redbridge striker has proved an adept target man.

His chief remit is to hold the ball up for the likes of Curtis, Lowe and Gareth Evans to run onto and drive at defenders.

Jackett feels Hawkins' qualities are the reason why his fellow attackers have thrived.

'˜Hawkins is a good player to play with,' added the Pompey boss. 

'˜He will set up a lot for you.

'˜If you run at players at the opposition then someone like Hawkins can get the ball down for you to give you that chance.

'˜We've seen that with Gareth Evans, Lowe, David Wheeler, Andre Green and Curtis.'

Despite the trio's fine start, Jackett warned them '“ and the rest of his Pompey troops '“ that they cannot be any margin for error.

The 56-year-old reckons if his side drop their standards than they will be punished.

He also feels there are ares the Blues can improve.

Jackett added: '˜Like all of the team, we have to make sure we keep our standards high.

'˜It doesn't take much in professional football '“ five or 10 per cent from it being a bad performance and a disaster.

'˜In reality, the margins are far closer than that.

'˜We have to set our standards high, try to keep them there and wherever we can try to improve certain aspects.

'˜We all know we have to keep our heads down, keep working hard and where we can improve.'
