Jackett reveals his Pompey blueprint

The Blues boss has told how he wants to help put an infrastructure in place which will prevent a repeat of the club’s fall down the leagues.

And Jackett has highlighted Watford as an example of the path to follow when taking a long-term view and putting stable footings in place.

The 55-year-old believes it’s key to tap into the ‘unique’ elements he’s encountered at Fratton Park, after this week signing an extended contract until 2021.

But the former Wolves boss promised his plans won’t neglect getting things right on the pitch.

Jackett said: ‘I’ve enjoyed my short time here and it’s a fantastic club.

‘It gives me backing and, personally, more determination to bring promotion to Portsmouth.

‘I understand how football management is. You need to win on Saturday.

‘Your focus does go on that, but, similarly, making long-term decisions for the club can help as well.

‘There’s nobody more focussed on winning than me.

‘But as a person in position to make the right calls overall, it shows fantastic backing.

‘It gives me great determination to succeed.

‘I would want to be here for a long time, but I’d want to leave the club in a better state than I found it in.

‘For the clubs I’ve taken on, overall, that has been the case. I’ll be working 24/7 to make sure that’s the case here.

‘I want to support, say, Mark Kelly and support Mark Catlin and (head of recruitment) Phil Boardman in their roles and decisions. With it, I have a lot of experience and can bring that to those roles.

‘That’s all towards having a successful first team.

‘Portsmouth is a unique club. It’s a community club.

‘The nature of it is something we can tap in and use to be successful. Harnessing the strengths of the club and realising they are the key to unlocking both short-term and long-term potential.’

Jackett feels there are a number of contributory ‘satellites’ which he will consider at Pompey - with Watford’s getting a similar process right in recent years.

He said: ‘If you’re going to attract players, facilities are a consideration these days.

‘Facilities aren’t everything. There’s potential, division and money, those things are there. Training grounds have improved in the last few years.

‘There’s all of those satellites, if you like, point to success.

‘There’s no better example than Portsmouth that you can go along, but when it crashes you can fall too far back.

‘Watford was a good example of how we got into the top division over quite a lot of years without the finance and backing that’s there now.

‘We got into the Premier League and went down into the Championship.

‘There were two or three regimes but because the youth policy there was that good they never dropped out of the Championship.

‘Sean Dyche was half way and Malky Mackay wasn’t far away.

‘Lloyd Doyley came through and Ashley Young was sold for a really good amount.

‘The club never fell too far down because of the youth policy.

‘They then sold to good owners and have gone a different route.

‘The satellites, the things around it, stopped them falling too far away.

‘West Brom and Burnley are other good examples. You don’t aim to, but if you slip you don’t fall too far away.

‘Portsmouth went too far before regrouping, but there has to be a basis to fight back as some stage.’
