James Baker and Emma Jolley take Hayling 10 titles

The Hayling 10 race returned on Sunday with James Baker and Emma Jolley sealing success.

Although the race wasn't part of the Hampshire Road Race League this year it showed it remains a popular event on the calendar.

Runners from clubs around the south took part and lots of personal bests were smashed even though conditions were a bit tricky.

It is a nice route and even flatter than the Great South Run but some of the seafront sections later in the race certainly can be a challenge if the breeze gets up.

Chichester's Baker was away and clear as he completed the 10 miles in 54min 09sec.

The remarkably prolific race winner first ran the event 21 years ago in 1997 when he then got under 55 minutes for the first time.

Second this year was Worthing's Jamie Corbett in 55.36 with Itchen Spitfires runner Alastair Wilkins completing the podium in third (55.41).

Gosport Road Runners' Ben Toye had a storming run to get fourth in 55.52.

City of Portsmouth's Jolley has been flying all year and she continued her super strong form to finish first lady with an impressive time of 1.01.26.

Second was Winchester & District's class performer Kathy Bailey in 1.02.53 and third was Lewes runner Rachael Phelps (1.06.13).

The race is hosted by the Havant AC and is always a nice fun event with a good community feel and lots of support.

Clubs including Gosport Road Runners, Denmead Striders, Portsmouth Joggers, Fareham Crusaders, Stubbington Green Runners and Victory were well represented.

Baffins Fitclub had a huge turnout as they supported the event in great numbers and recorded some great new personal bests.

Julian Manning led the way for Denmead (57.19) with Jhon Cosgrove, of the Vegan Runners, sealing an emphatic top-10 position with another brilliant clocking of 59.11 backing up his excellent Great South Run. 

Pete Abrahams posted 59.23, leading the charge for Fareham Crusaders.

With 410 finishers it was a superb race, many made their 10-mile debuts while others were able to achieve personal goals and new best times.

Everyone was cheered around the course by the volunteers and marshals as well as getting great support from friends, family, residents and club-mates.
