Knockout potential arrives in Portsmouth – building stronger young people through boxing

Knockout Potential has officially arrived in Portsmouth, bringing a powerful new youth boxing and mentoring programme designed to build confidence, discipline and resilience in young people.

Now based at Treadgold’s Gym on Bishop Street, the programme offers structured boxing sessions, fitness training and mental wellbeing support, giving young people and the wider community a positive environment to grow, stay active and develop both physically and mentally.

Founded by Karl Matthews, a former British Army soldier and close protection operative, Knockout Potential was created with a clear mission: to give young people structure, guidance and a positive outlet through boxing and mentorship. Drawing on his own life experiences, Karl is passionate about helping the next generation develop not only physically, but mentally and emotionally.

The programme offers a range of weekly sessions designed for all ages and abilities, including youth development classes, mixed youth and adult boxing fitness, and a dedicated ladies-only programme. In addition, Knockout Potential delivers a unique “mental health through boxing” session, providing open group support focused on building confidence, resilience and a positive mindset.

Sessions run weekly at Treadgold’s Gym on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays, creating a consistent and supportive environment for participants to train, learn and grow. The programme has already begun to make a positive impact within the local community, working closely with schools and organisations to support young people.

Looking ahead, Knockout Potential will also be running a Summer Camp throughout August, offering structured daytime activities for young people during the school holidays, while also introducing opportunities for parents to get involved through fitness and boxing sessions.

Karl is now inviting parents, local organisations and businesses to get involved as the programme continues to grow. Whether through participation, partnership or sponsorship, Knockout Potential aims to build something lasting and meaningful for the Portsmouth community.
