That's after four-time world champion John Higgins, who was set to face the 17-year-old on Wednesday, pulled out of the competition.

Instead, Wilson will face amateur player Hamim Hussain who has been drafted in to replace the top Scot potter at the event.

Higgins lost just four frames on his way to winning last week's Players' Championship title.

He hammered Ronnie O'Sullivan 10-3 in the final and claimed whitewash wins over Jordan Brown - who was the shock winner of last month's Welsh Open - and former world champion Mark Selby.

Higgins described it as the 'best week of his snooker life' after lifting the 31st ranking title of his decorated career.

Wilson was all set for the toughest test of his professional career to date against the Scot at the Gibraltar Open - taking place in the Covid secure Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes – prior to his pull out.

But now the teenager will face 19-year-old amateur player Hussain for the right to reach round two.

Hussain did enjoy a run to the third round of last month’s Shoot Out event where he beat Duane Jones – a player Wilson defeated at the recent Welsh Open – along the way.
