Southsea celebrate national title

Southsea have toasted a thrilling national triumph.

The Great Salterns outfit were crowned Mitchell/Thompson over-55 champions by the National Association of Public Golf Courses (NAPGC) at Frilford Heath in Oxford.

Colin Bartram, Darren Robinson, John Goater, John Walker, Peter Betterridge, Alan Mitchell, Mick Hocking and Gordon Boniface made up the victorious Southsea team.

They secured success on countback from west of London regional representatives Ruislip, who have prevailed in the past two seasons.

Representing the south of London, Southsea also beat off the challenges of Rose Hill (midlands/north) and Epping Forest (east of London).

The Portsmouth outfit were two points down with only the final pairs to finish.

Six-handicapper Bartram and Robinson (12) came in with 36 points, leaving the Ruislip duo requiring a 35 to clinch a third successive title.

However, they could only muster 34 '“ leaving the two teams tied on 141.

Countback then showed Southsea had recorded a 70 against Ruislip's 68 '“ meaning they were champions.

Rose Hill finished with 131 points, while Epping Forest totalled 129.

Goater (12) and Walker (14) paired up for a 40, with Betteridge (12) and Mitchell (12) recording 31 and the partnership of Hocking (17) and Boniface (14) a 34.
