Yorkshire’s head coach saw his bowlers frustrated by the visitors as James Vince (119) and Sean Ervine (123) both notched centuries on day three of the County Championship division one clash.

The duo were supported by Adam Wheater (62) and Ryan McLaren (55 not out) as they helped Hampshire avoid the follow-on against the reigning champions.

Vince & Co had started the day on 141 for five in their reply to Yorkshire’s daunting first-innings total of 593 for nine declared.

But with most people expecting a heavy defeat, the visitors showed their resolve to battle back and close on 450 for eight.

Gillespie led the admirers of their fighting spirit – and the innings of Vince, in particular.

And he reckons the chances of a final-day victory for his side have dwindled.

The former Australia fast bowler said: ‘I must give Hampshire a lot of credit for the way they played.

‘It will be a lot tougher for us now they have saved the follow-on and it has made a result a bit more difficult.

‘First and foremost we have to get these last two wickets and then see where we are later in the day.

‘I thought Vince played very well and all credit to Ervine for gutsing it out.

‘Vince is a quality player and both his driving and the way he left the ball was very good.’

Hampshire, who drew their opening game with Warwickshire last week, will look to frustrate their hosts further when play resumes this morning.
