The research, commissioned from Asda, also found 15 per cent of the 1,000 kids under eight surveyed believe chocolate is picked from trees.

In response Havant’s Asda branch has teamed up with celebrity chef James Martin to teach primary school children simple facts about the food they eat.

The ‘Food School’ initiative will help children develop a love and knowledge of food that will carry them through from their early years to adult life.

To road-test the programme. this week James invited 12 children into the store in Larchwood Avenue to ask some food-related questions including ‘why is a kiwi hairy?’

James said: ‘By igniting children’s interest in food and making it fun to learn the stories behind the food they eat everyday, it’s a problem that can be easily solved.

‘Simple pointers from mum and dad when out shopping or cooking simple meals and baking at home can help kids look at food in a totally different way.’
