Bake Off star reveals top tips and whips up recipe for success

THANKS to the time, effort and skills laid on by one Great British Bake Off (GBBO) star, university students have been learning how to cook up a storm in their halls of residence.

For the past three weeks Enwezor Nzegwu – from the hit TV show’s 2014 series – has been teaching University of Portsmouth students how to cook in an easy, cheap and safe way.

Third years from the university’s TV and broadcasting course worked together to broadcast the show named Fast, Fresh Food with Enwezor, live, and this week muffin burgers were the meal of choice.

Forty-two-year-old Enwezor, who has been a business consultant at the university for seven years, said: ‘I’m really passionate about students learning how to cook. I want them to move away from the packaged and sometimes quite unhealthy meals out there.

‘Last week I was in my comfort zone because we made Viennese whirls with butter cream and jam, and before that mac and cheese. This week it was English muffins with a burger inside as well as beetroot, rocket and tomato.

‘The programmes have been a success for the students who took part – I learned so much during the GBBO, it was a challenging experience and I learned so much about doing stuff on camera, so I wanted to do something to give back to the university and the students, who are most important.’

The three-programme project was designed not only to get freshers cooking, but to give the TV and broadcasting students the chance to hone in on the skills they’ll be using in the future.

Each show was broadcast on the Portsmouth Big Screen at the Guildhall and on the university’s Creative and Cultural Industries YouTube channel.

Charlie Watts, leader of the university’s TV and broadcasting course, said: ‘This week’s show was run by 19 students who took on the roles of presenters, directors, camera operators and more.

‘Enwezor was an integral part of the show, he came up with the recipes and he’s not only a great baker, he’s great on camera.

For the students to work with someone who is so skilled has been really great.’

Alina Buzdygan took on a marketing role for the project. She said: ‘Our third show went really well. Enwezor is a great guy and has been lovely to work with.’
