Console Corner: Star Wars Battlefront review

Graphics from another galaxy.

Star Wars is back with the much-anticipated next gen version of Battlefront and Darth Vader has never looked better.

The game has been met with mixed reviews so far but I’m going to tell you why it is well worth getting.

Most of the criticisms levelled at Battlefront, which came out on Tuesday, stem from a lack of long-term depth.

I’ll address that later on but first lets look at what Battlefront does brilliantly.

The graphics, sound and overall gloss are up there with the best ever seen in a computer game, comparable in terms of jaw-dropping awesomeness to The Order: 1886.

You are truly immersed in the Star Wars universe and fans of the films will instantly be beaming with joy as soon as they pick up the control pad.

The sound really is out of this world, you can even hear droplets of water hitting leaves in Endor.

There are a huge amount of game modes available, the crowning glory of which is undoubtedly Walker Assault. It is the game’s major triumph and perhaps highlights my one big frustration with SWB.

That being EA/DICE should have limited the number of game modes and focused on making them all as good and exciting as Walker Assault.

Quality over quantity in this respect would definitely have pushed SWB into the very top tier in gaming terms.

As it stands SWB will give you at least 10 or 11 hours of unforgettable gameplay and it is very easy to pick up and play.

Maps are the big let down in multiplayer mode with a lack of thought going into the design to make multiplayer good enough to challenge the likes of Call of Duty long term.

But who is to say these issues can’t be addressed with future downloadable content?

The framework is there, and beautiful it is too.

For me Star Wars is the best looking and most exciting game of the year so far for the time you will spend playing it.

Let’s just hope future DLC, the first of which is predicted to land at the beginning of next year, can give SWB the long lifespan it deserves.
