Great South Run 2024: A-Z of road closures for iconic race

A host of road closures will be in place during the weekend of the Great South Run which will allow around 25,000 to take part in a series of races.

The Great South Run weekend takes place on October 19 and 20 with the 5k, a mascot race and junior events all taking place on the Saturday before the ten-mile race on the Sunday.

The routes take in a number of roads in the Southsea area which means that a number of road closures as well as parking and waiting restrictions will be put in place to keep the runners safe and drivers are urged to plan their routes while city residents are also urged to check hat is happening in their area.

The weekend and closures and restrictions are:

  • Avenue de Caen from 6am to 5pm on October 19, and 9.45am to approximately 12.30pm on October 20 with access also restricted before that time.
  • Bus turning point at the end of Clarence Esplanade from 9.45am to 10.45am on October 19
  • Clarence Esplanade from Avenue de Caen to junction with Jack Cockerill Way (west of entrance to Pyramids Car Park) from 6am on October 14 to 5pm on October 20
  • Clarence Esplanade between South Parade and Jack Cockerill Way from 8am on October 18 to 5pm on October 20
  • Clarence Esplanade between Avenue de Caen and Clarence Pier Road from 6am to 5pm on October 19, and 9.45am to approximately 12.30pm on October 20 with access also restricted before that time.
  • Clarence Pier Road (waiting restrictions from 6am to 6pm on October 20 and from 9am to 12.30pm from its junction with Pier Road Roundabout to Seafront the Esplanade Car Park entrance)
  • The Dell from 6am to 5pm on October 19, and 9.45am to approximately 12.30pm on October 20 with access also restricted before that time
  • Jack Cockerhill Way (waiting restrictions from 6am on October 14 to 5pm on October 20)
  • Long Curtain Road from the parking area and coach park to Pier Road Roundabout on October 19 from 9am to 10.45am
  • Pier Road south of its junction with Duisburg Way from 9am to 12.30pm on October 19 (access only), and 9.45am to approximately 12.30pm on October 20 with access also restricted before that time. (Waiting restrictions northbound)
  • Victoria Avenue from 8am on October 18 to 5pm on October 20
  • Western Parade between Clarence Parade and Southsea Terrace on October 19 from 9am to 1pm and waiting restrictions at other times
  • Wickham Street (waiting restrictions from 5am to 5pm on October 20)

A large number of the city’s roads which are part of the route or surrounding area will also be closed and have waiting restrictions on them from 9.30am to sometime between 1.35pm and 5pm when the last of the runners have cleared the area and it is safe.

  • Isambard Brunel Road between Alec Rose Lane and Winston Churchill Avenue
  • High Street between Pembroke Road and St George’s Road
  • Jubilee Terrace
  • Kings Road between Flint Street and Landport Terrace
  • Kings Terrace
  • King Richard I Road
  • Landport Terrace
  • Lord Montgomery Way
  • Market Way between Unicorn Gate and Hope Street roundabout
  • Museum Road
  • The Ocean at the End of the Line
  • Ordnance Row
  • Park Road between Burnaby Road and St George’s Road

  • Queen Street from its junction with The Hard to its junction with Wickham Street
  • Queen Street from its junction with Wickham Street to its junction with Alfred Road
  • Serpentine Way (across Southsea Common)
  • South Parade
  • Southsea Esplanade and Southsea Esplanade link roads
  • Southsea Terrace
  • St George’s Road
  • St Helen’s Parade
  • Victoria Avenue
  • Victoria Avenue Spur
  • Western Parade
  • Wickham Street
  • Winston Churchill Avenue between Isambard Brunel Road and Blackfriars Road (which will be closed earlier from 9.10am to enable safe setup of the drinks station)
  • Winston Churchill Avenue from Guildhall Walk to the Bradford Junction Roundabout

Participants, spectators and visitors to the area are being urged to take the dedicated PR4 park and ride service from Tipner, use public transport, or walk or cycle to avoid likely congestion.
