Bedhampton park tables restored after vandals destroyed them

When historic Bedhampton park Bidbury Mead had its playground revamped in 2014, three new tables were provided for locals to use.

Families gathered to enjoy picnics while children explored the new facilities – but use of the tables halted when two were irreparably vandalised in 2015.

But now Hampshire County Councillor Liz Fairhurst, who represents north west Havant, used part of her annual budget to allow Bidbury Mead Friends and Havant Men’s Shed to provide replacements.

Cllr Fairhurst, BMF chairwoman, said: ‘We were saddened when the irresponsible acts of some individuals resulted in families being affected.

‘The playground is very popular and it meant chances to stay longer at the park were reduced. Now we have replaced the tables we hope things will return to normal.

‘We must say thank you to the members of Havant Men’s Shed, who used their talents to make the tables.

‘Here is a great example of the community coming together to combine their efforts for everyone’s benefit.’

Installation was done at no cost by Norse SE, Havant Borough Council’s newly-created company.

Ron Tate, BMF project manager, said: ‘When the tables were vandalised, one was broken and one damaged by fire. One of the new tables has been designed to suit youngsters having their own special gatherings.

‘Lets hope families can once again arrange picnics at the park in similar numbers.’

Steve Sadler, chairman of Havant Men’s Shed, added: ‘We’re always on the look out for ways in which we can help the community.

‘We are continuing discussions with BMF to see if there is more we can do at Bidbury Mead.’
