The popular heritage railway experience transforms a traditional steam train into a mesmerising lightshow with thousands of synchronised LED bulbs, seasonal music and enchanting entertainment throughout the journey.

New for 2026 is Disco Ball Alley, featuring suspended mirror balls that create a dazzling light display across the countryside filling the carriages with shimmering disco vibes. At the summit of the journey, an upgraded Snow Light Cascade will enhance the magical spectacle!

Passengers can enjoy interactive games, jolly singalongs and the return of the much-loved ‘Voiceover Man’, known for his work on Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor. New this year is his Voiceover Man Christmas Quiz, adding an extra element of fun to the journey.

Steam Illuminations features Christmas Vibes, running until 28 December, providing fun and Christmas tunes for all the family. From 29 December to 2 January, Party Anthems provides a perfect night out for friends and work parties – a chance to sing and dance in the aisles to popular hits from the 1960s to the present.

All passengers will receive an interactive LED wristband flashing in sync with the music, which they can take home as a memento.

The thrilling experience departs from Alresford or Alton, with the steam train journey lasting approximately one hour and 45 minutes. Passengers can enjoy seasonal refreshments, sweet treats and warming drinks, with Festive Picnic Boxes also available to pre-order and enjoy during the journey.

At Alresford, the fun continues - explore the chalets in the Christmas Village, enjoy the illuminated projections, the brilliant Talking and Singing Trees and the new marshmallow-toasting area.

Rebecca Dalley, CEO of The Watercress Line, said: “There’s something wonderful about celebrating Christmas on a steam train, and our Steam Illuminations give families and friends the chance to create memories together that they’ll treasure long after the decorations come down.

“From the dazzling lights and music onboard the trains, to the festive atmosphere at our stations, it’s a real Christmas experience from start to finish. We’re looking forward to welcoming visitors on board and making this year’s Steam Illuminations our most fantastic one yet.”

Families and groups of friends are encouraged to book early to secure their seats for one of Hampshire’s most magical Christmas experiences.
