She was surrounded by her family, fellow residents and team members as she toasted the occasion with a glass of white wine – and even shared some words of wisdom.

When asked the secret to leading a long and happy life, Morna said: “Always smile! Oh, and remember to eat your vegetables.”

Born in Edinburgh, Morna relocated to Essex at an early age and went on to serve her country during the second world war as a Wren in the Royal Navy’s operations room.

Shortly after VE Day, Morna met Desmond and it was love at first sight. When he was repatriated to Rhodesia, Morna sailed out to join him and the couple married soon afterwards. The newlyweds settled on a farm in Salisbury before moving to Choma, Zambia, where Morna worked as a chemist, before they returned to the UK in 2002.

Family has always been at the heart of Morna’s life, and she is now the proud matriarch of a growing legacy of five children, 16 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.

A keen gardener and classical music enthusiast, Morna loves spending time outdoors. She has also always enjoyed getting lost in a good book, sewing and spending quality time with family and friends.

Commenting on her celebrations, Morna’s family said: “Morna’s 101st birthday was so enjoyable. It was wonderful to see everyone come together for the occasion. There was a lovely turnout from Morna’s fellow residents, which helped to make the day even more memorable.

“We want to extend a special thank you to all the brilliant staff at Kings Lodge, who truly went above and beyond for mum.”

Sajila Mano, Home Manager at Kings Lodge, said: “Morna’s 101st birthday celebrations were a truly joyous occasion. We honoured her many years of life with cake, music and a room full of love.
