In the heart of Portsmouth South, the transition to warmer, more energy-efficient homes is no longer just a policy ambition — it is becoming a lived reality.

Through the government’s Warm Homes Plan, local residents are seeing first-hand how coordinated retrofit delivery can reduce energy bills, improve health outcomes, and support the journey towards net zero.

Working in close collaboration with local stakeholders and elected representatives, Aura Retrofit has been instrumental in turning that ambition into a practical, measurable impact across homes in the region.

A recent engagement with Stephen Morgan, MP for Portsmouth South, highlighted both the scale of the challenge and the transformative effect of well-delivered retrofit programmes when placed in the hands of experienced delivery partners.

A Shared Mission: Warm, Affordable, Low-Carbon Homes

During a recent visit to Portsmouth South, Stephen Morgan MP joined Aura Retrofit to meet residents and observe completed and ongoing retrofit works.

The discussions focused on a shared objective: ensuring that government investment translates into real-world improvements in comfort, affordability, and sustainability.

The Warm Homes Plan, as discussed during the visit, is designed to address three critical national priorities:

  • Reducing household energy bills

  • Tackling fuel poverty and cold homes

  • Accelerating the shift away from fossil fuel heating

Aura Retrofit’s delivery approach aligns directly with these goals — combining technical assessment, funding navigation, and end-to-end installation to ensure households receive the right interventions at the right time.

Resident Case Study 1: Malcolm – From a Cold Home to a Fully Renewable Future

Malcolm has lived in his Southsea home since 1976, having moved from Manchester in 1969. For many years, his heating situation was extremely limited, relying on a single portable radiator to warm his property. Like many older residents in similar housing stock, rising energy costs and outdated systems left him in a position of ongoing hardship.

Following a referral from Age UK Portsmouth, Aura Retrofit conducted a comprehensive whole-house energy assessment. This identified Malcolm as eligible for fully funded upgrades under government-backed schemes.

The installed measures included:

  • Air source heat pump

  • Cavity wall insulation

  • New radiators

  • Solar PV panels

The transformation has been significant. Malcolm now benefits from a consistently warm home, improved indoor comfort, and a marked reduction in running costs. Beyond immediate comfort, the installation of solar PV has opened the door to long-term financial benefit through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), with Aura Retrofit supporting him through the process of maximising returns from his renewable generation.

What was once a high-risk, inefficient home has now become a stable, future-ready, energy-efficient property.

Resident Case Study 2: Donna – Restoring Warmth and Stability for a Young Family

Donna, a stay-at-home mother from Southsea, faced an urgent and distressing situation shortly after moving into her home in November 2023. Her boiler was condemned during the winter period, leaving her and her two young children without heating or hot water.

Through the LEAP Boiler Scheme, Aura Retrofit was quickly engaged to support the household. A rapid-response installation ensured a brand-new boiler was fitted in time for Christmas, restoring warmth and security at a critical moment for the family.

However, the challenges within the property extended beyond heating failure. Persistent damp and mould issues were later identified, prompting a deeper, whole-house approach.

Aura Retrofit subsequently delivered a fully funded retrofit package, including:

  • Air source heat pump installation

  • New radiators

  • Cavity wall insulation

  • A comprehensive ventilation strategy

The outcome has been transformative. Donna’s home is now warm, dry, and significantly more energy efficient. The interventions not only reduced energy bills but also resolved the underlying causes of damp and mould, improving both living conditions and long-term health outcomes for the family.

Policy in Practice: Stephen Morgan MP on Delivery at Scale

Stephen Morgan MP praised the work being delivered across Portsmouth South and wider regions of South and Central England, recognising the practical impact of retrofit programmes in communities already facing cost-of-living pressures.

He highlighted that the Warm Homes Plan is designed to directly address the realities of rising energy bills, poor housing quality, and continued reliance on fossil fuels. Importantly, he noted that success depends on effective delivery partners capable of turning funding into action on the ground.

In this context, Aura Retrofit was recognised as a key delivery organisation translating national policy into measurable local outcomes — ensuring that households are not only supported financially but guided through every stage of the retrofit journey with care, clarity, and confidence.

Delivering More Than Installation: A Whole-House Approach

Across both case studies, a consistent theme emerges: successful retrofit is not just about installing technology — it is about understanding homes as systems and residents as individuals.

Aura Retrofit’s approach focuses on:

  • Whole-house assessments, not isolated fixes

  • Tailored solutions based on property condition and occupancy needs

  • End-to-end project management, including funding eligibility support

  • Long-term energy performance and comfort outcomes

This integrated model ensures that interventions such as heat pumps, insulation, and solar PV work together effectively, rather than in isolation.

Strengthening Communities Through Energy Transformation

The impact of these upgrades extends beyond individual households. Improved energy efficiency reduces pressure on public services, enhances wellbeing, and contributes directly to carbon reduction targets.

For Portsmouth South, this means:

  • Healthier homes with fewer cold-related risks

  • Lower household energy expenditure

  • Increased uptake of renewable technologies

  • Stronger alignment with national net-zero objectives

As more homes are brought into retrofit programmes, the cumulative effect strengthens community resilience while supporting the UK’s broader energy transition.

Looking Ahead

The collaboration between Aura Retrofit and Stephen Morgan demonstrates what is possible when policy ambition is matched with delivery capability.

The Warm Homes Plan is not simply a framework for future improvement — it is already reshaping homes today. Through coordinated action, trusted partnerships, and a focus on real-world outcomes, the pathway towards warmer, healthier, and more affordable housing is becoming a tangible reality for residents across Portsmouth South.

And at the centre of that progress is a simple but powerful principle: homes should work for the people living in them — not against them.
