Beating the Bounds
Long before printed maps - and well before Google Maps - local communities kept track of their boundaries by walking them. The centuries old tradition of Beating the Bounds involved villagers, especially youngsters, walking the perimeter of their parish or manor, marking key points by striking them with sticks to help remember the route.

In Wickham, the first recorded Beating the Bounds took place on 15th August 1767 to mark the edges of Wickham Manor. Many walks have taken place in the intervening years.
Everyone is welcome to join this year’s Beating of the Bounds. Explore hidden paths and bridges, take in previously unseen views and enjoy great company.

Come for the history, stay for the cake, sticks optional!
The 2026 event takes place on Saturday, 5th September. Meet at St Nicholas Church car park, Southwick Road, PO17 6HP at 9.30am. The walk covers just under 9 miles in total, but you can join for as much or as little as you wish. The event is free and open to all.
