Drivers across Hampshire urged to stay alert after 94 casualties linked to animal-related road collisions

As the darker days roll in, drivers across Hampshire are being reminded to stay vigilant on the roads this autumn.

New analysis by Volvo of Department for Transport data found that animal-related collisions resulted in 94 casualties in the region between 2021 and 2025. The South East accounted for 20.4% of all such collisions nationwide, with incidents most common in October and November.

With animal collisions rising as the autumn months set in, Waylands Havant is raising awareness of the increased risks on the roads, particularly on rural routes.

Andy Axson, Head of Business, from Waylands Havant, said: "Animal-related collisions can happen instantly and often when drivers least expect them. As we head into the darker months, reduced visibility and increased wildlife activity can make driving conditions more challenging.

"Simple steps such as reducing speed, paying attention to wildlife warning signs and staying alert around bends can make a difference in helping drivers avoid potentially serious accidents."

Within the region, the Hampshire police force area recorded 80 collisions resulting in 94 casualties between 2021-2025.

Across the UK, these animal-related road collisions resulted in 1,503 collisions and 1,939 human casualties during the five-year period.

Andy Axson added: “To help combat the problem, our vehicles feature tried and tested technology that can detect large animals on or near the road, alert drivers to a potential hazard and, if necessary, automatically intervene.

“At Waylands Havant, we are passionate about the safety of drivers and would encourage anyone to come along to our showroom and learn about the technology we have to offer and how this can help to grant peace of mind when driving in the darker months.”
