Homemade bread daily in Hayling Care Home
The wonderful benefits of homemade bread at Wimborne Care Home on Hayling Island; there is nothing quite like the smell of fresh baked bread and at Wimborne it is a part of everyday life.

Each day the residents can enjoy the comforting experience of homemade bread being prepared and baked. More than simply finding something delicious to eat it also brings a host of benefits to residents. From wellbeing and reminiscence to social connection and sensory enjoyment.
A taste of home. For many of the residents the delicious smell of baking bread can bring back happy memories of family kitchens, childhood, baking with parents and grandparents and sharing meals around the table.

Wimborne is a mixed residential and dementia home; these familiar sights, smells and tastes can be particularly meaningful for people living with dementia, helping to stimulatememories and encourage conversation.
Something to look forward tp. Having fresh bread each day creates a wonderful sense of anticipation. Residents can watch and in some cases assist the dough preparation, enjoy the aroma and absolutely sample or eat and enjoy the finished product.
It becomes part of the rhythm of the day – a simple pleasure residents look forward to.
Involvement is encouraged. Wimborne has several baking and cookery opportunities for residents to become involved. Whether that is weighing, mixing, kneading, shaping the dough or simply watching the process.

For those residents who do enjoy baking it can provide a chance to use familiar skills and maintain a sense of independence and purpose.
Bringing people together. Food has a wonderful ability to bring people together, the dining room at Wimborne, with fresh flowers, tables of 4 or 8, well laid and ‘fully dressed’ with napkins and table cloths is a tremendous space for convivial conversation and sitting together comfortably.
The fresh bread is served with homemade soups, alongside a light salad, with an autumnal casserole or stew or as part of the snack options throughout the day.
Because at Wimborne Care Home on Hayling they are proud to make every day feel more like home – one loaf at a time! Moving into their care home does not mean leaving the comforts of home behind.
Wimborne’s General Manager Kelly Brown said; ‘It is wonderful to see how something as simple as homemade bread can create such a positive response. The smell brings back so many memories and naturally starts conversations. For the Wimborne team this is exactly what care should be about – we are not simply providing meals but we are creating experiences that feel familiar, meaningful and enjoyable. These little moments make a big difference to everyone’s day.’
At Wimborne they understand the simplest things can bring the greatest pleasure.
