Portsmouth named among UK’s best places for student nightlife in 2026
For students deciding where to study, university life is not only about courses and accommodation. The cost of a night out, how easy it is to get home and the number of places available after dark can all influence the student experience.

A new study by Lesson Maker Pro compared 55 UK university cities and towns across drink and food prices, nightlife venues, safety, student population and online nightlife popularity to identify the best places for student nightlife in 2026. The ranking assessed 12 different metrics across affordability, places to go, safety and nightlife popularity.
Portsmouth has emerged as one of the UK’s strongest student nightlife destinations, ranking 14th overall among the 55 locations analysed.
Affordability is one of Portsmouth’s biggest strengths. A domestic pint costs an average of £4.70, while cocktails average just £7.00, one of the lowest prices recorded in the study.
Getting home after a night out is also relatively inexpensive. Portsmouth records a taxi starting cost or 1km journey of £1.18, while the average late-night fast food meal costs £6.79.
The city also provides a substantial choice of places to go after dark, recording 6.83 bars and pubs per 10,000 people, alongside 0.64 nightclubs and 0.96 live music venues per 10,000 residents.
Students looking for something to eat after a night out also have relatively strong provision, with 3.82 late-night food venues open past 11pm per 10,000 people.
Portsmouth's walking-alone-at-night safety score stands at 49.11, while there are 1,130 students per 10,000 residents, giving the city a sizeable university population relative to its overall size.
The city records 6.23 TikTok nightlife hashtags per 10,000 people and 43.42 Google searches for a “night out in Portsmouth” per 10,000 residents.
Together, these factors give Portsmouth an overall nightlife score of 35.97, enough to place the city comfortably inside the UK's top 15.
Its 14th-place finish puts Portsmouth ahead of a number of well-known university and nightlife destinations, including Sunderland, Liverpool, Cardiff, Brighton and Hove, Oxford, Sheffield, Glasgow, Bristol, Newcastle upon Tyne, Nottingham, London and Manchester.
Portsmouth also ranks considerably higher than several other south coast university destinations, including Plymouth in 25th, Brighton and Hove in 26th, Bournemouth in 50th and Southampton in 54th.
St Andrews takes the top spot nationally with an overall score of 74.58. The Scottish university town has 32.74 bars and pubs per 10,000 people, the highest figure in the study, as well as 6,667 students per 10,000 residents.
Aberystwyth ranks second with a score of 63.54, helped by £3.75 pints and the highest nightclub density in the ranking at 3.20 per 10,000 people.
Durham places third and performs particularly strongly for safety. Its walking-alone-at-night score of 72.39 is the highest of any location analysed, while it also records the highest TikTok nightlife popularity at 77.43 hashtags per 10,000 people.
Cambridge and Leeds complete the top five, followed by Lancaster, Stirling, Canterbury, Bath and Lincoln.
Leeds records the highest Google search demand for a night out at 1,335 searches per 10,000 people, while Lincoln has the cheapest taxi cost in the study at just £0.75.
